A 24-hour urine test for measuring nutritional and toxic mineral (elements) after I.V. treatment with EDTA. These results are usually compared to the pre-chelation results.
The profile includes aluminum, cadmium, calcium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, magnesium, manganese, and zinc. The post chelation 24-hour collection begins at the same time as the I.V. chelation therapy is started. Patients must empty bladder immediately prior to IV. Urine must be collected for a full 24-hour period, including during the IV therapy. Patient should note time and date of last urination for an accurate 24-hour urine collection. The collection container is a one-gallon mineral-free amber plastic jug. This may be requested from the Bio-Center Laboratory. A mineral-free cup may be used to catch urine and then the sample is poured into the gallon jug. Do not rinse the cup between collections as tap water will contain trace minerals. Seal the cup with the mineral-free plastic lid between collections. NOTE: the collection jug must be refrigerated.
If for some reason the patient is unable to collect the specimen for a full 24-hours, note the length of time of collection on the requisition slip. Mix the collection jug vigorously before pouring an aliquot of 50 mL (about 1/4 a cup) into the transport container. Refrigerate or freeze the container for transport.
A sample will be rejected if the total 24-hour urine volume is not noted on the requisition or if non-mineral-free containers are used for collection and transport.
