Product Code: LCreaS
Creatinine is formed from muscle creatine. It is formed at a very specific rate and does not vary by more than 10% a day. The rate of formation is so constant it is used in the calculation of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Since creatinine is a waste product and is excreted by the kidneys, it is used (along with the BUN) as a test for kidney function. However, severe muscle wasting diseases (eg, rhabdomyolysis) may also cause an increase in the serum creatinine level. Elevated levels may also be found in obstruction of the urinary system and reduced renal blood flow.
